Charles E. Whiteman

Charles E. Whiteman, 91, of South Bend, passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born October 5, 1930 in Winamac, IN to the late Charles and Tressa (Osborn) Whiteman.  On October 24, 1953 in Mishawaka, IN, Charles married Wanda (Pruitt) Whiteman, who preceded him in death on January 3, 2017.  Charles passed away on Wanda’s birthday; we know they are happy to be celebrating together again.

Charles is survived by his daughter, Aileen (Les) Clark of North Liberty, IN; sons, John (Christine) Whiteman and Daniel Whiteman both of Mishawaka, IN; five grandchildren, Joshua (Katie) Boren, Brad Clark, Matt Clark, Jonna (Jeremy) Becraft, and Tony Whiteman; six great-grandchildren, Laney, Madeline, Everett, Maci, Nadia, and Aidan; and special friends, Donna, Debbie, and Mark.  In addition to his wife and parents, Charles is preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Whiteman; and brothers, Richard Whiteman and David Whiteman.

Charles proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.  He worked as a plumber at Slutsky-Peltz Plumbing and Heating for 40 years until retiring in May 1994.  Charles was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 172, Mishawaka Lodge 130 F. & A.M., Ancient and Accept Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, and the Clay Men’s Club.  He was a member of Clay United Methodist Church.  Charles loved his dog, Britain, taking weekend trips to visit family, and was an avid Notre Dame football fan.  He was a previous season ticket holder and was fortunate to travel to some of the away games as well.  Charles was an apprentice instructor for the Union, and held many different officer positions, including past president.

The family would like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice for the care and compassion they showed to Charles over the past week. 

Friends may visit with the family on Friday, November 26, 2021 from 4-7 PM at Palmer Funeral Homes-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN 46635 with a Masonic memorial service at 6 PM.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 11 AM at the funeral home, with entombment and military honors to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, IN.
