Charles Worthen Obituary

Charles Robert Worthen, 88, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2026, in the city where he was born on August 18, 1938. He lived a life marked by steady devotion, practical skill, and a deep appreciation for the things he loved, and he will be remembered with affection by all who knew him.

He was the son of the late Clifford L. and M. Bernice (Brown) Worthen. Charles was also preceded in death by his wife, Connie M. Worthen, whom he married on April 22, 1957, and who passed away on November 27, 2020. In addition, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael L. Worthen, and his sister, Constance Myrtle Scott.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Melissa A. (Eric) Ornat and Michele T. Worthen, both of Mishawaka, IN. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A high school graduate, Charles went on to build a long and dependable work history. He retired from Russell Products, an RV parts distributor, where he worked in maintenance. He was known as a handy man who could be counted on to fix, repair, and improve whatever needed attention. Charles also served his country honorably in the United States Marines, a chapter of his life that reflected his sense of duty and commitment.

In his leisure time, Charles enjoyed airplanes, motorcycles, and automobiles. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and his interest in aviation reflected his lifelong appreciation for machines, mechanics, and the freedom of the open sky. Whether he was admiring an aircraft, working with his hands, or spending time around engines and equipment, he found satisfaction in the things that moved and inspired him.

Charles’ life was one of service, family, and simple pleasures, and his memory will remain a lasting comfort to those who loved him.

In accordance with Charles’ wishes, no services are planned at this time. His ashes will be interred at Smith’s Chapel Cemetery, Edwardsburg, MI, at a later date. Palmer Funeral Home—River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
