Clarence Altic, Jr. Obituary

Clarence B. Altic, Jr., a lifelong resident of South Bend passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at the age of 96.  He was born on August 22, 1924, in Frankfort, IN., the son of the late Clarence B. Altic, Sr., and Carrie P. (Hart).  He was known by so many endearing nicknames including J.R., Junior, Junie and Red.  Clarence attended Riley High School graduating in 1942.  He then enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was a flight engineer and a top turret gunner on a Martin Maurder B26 Bomber.  He proudly served is country and received an honorable discharge in 1945. 

After the war ended, Clarence returned to South Bend where he met his wife Phyllis.  On December 6, 1947, Clarence and Phyllis were married at All Saints EUB Church.  They recently celebrated 73 years of marriage.  Clarence began his career at the Studebaker Corporation working alongside his father as one of the father son teams.  He later was employed by Allied Products as a Quality Steel Inspector retiring in 1990 after 26 years.

Along with his wife Phyllis, he is survived by his daughters, Lindsae (Rev. David) Harrold of North Webster, IN and Judith Clifford of South Bend; grandsons, Christopher (Anne) Clifford of South Bend, Michael (Diane) Clifford of Lafayette, and Kevin (Christy) Harrold of Nappanee; and great grandchildren, Caleb, Isaac, Mason, Kylie and Reese Clifford and Jensen and Bennett Harrold.  Clarence was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael E. Clifford, sister, Katherine Raissle and brothers, Claris and James Altic.

Clarence was a current member of Grace United Methodist Church and was previously a member of Faith United Methodist Church for over 50 years.  For his enjoyment, Clarence loved feeding and watching the birds and playing the organ.  He was an avid golfer and bowler, member of the VFW and Shirks Organ Club.  His greatest joy was family and especially being a grandpa and great grandpa.

Private services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2021 with burial to follow at Southlawn Cemetery.  Arrangements for the Altic family are being handled by Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel.
