Clifford McCray Obituary

Clifford Lawrence McCray, 73, of South Bend passed away at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, January 3rd surrounded by family at Southfield Village Health Care following a lengthy illness.  Cliff was born July 2, 1947, in South Bend to the late Elinor B. (Maxson) and Lawrence E. McCray and was a lifetime area resident.  On January 8, 1972 in South Bend he married Cheryl L. “Cheri” Shumaker who survives.  Also surviving are his daughter, Jennifer L. Weaver (Sam) of Elkhart, IN; his son, David M. McCray (Amanda) of Walkerton, IN; his six grandchildren, Devin M., Aidan C. McCray, Jonathan D., Andrew S., Ryan M., and Timothy D. Weaver; a nephew, Craig Moody (Maureen) of Dallas, TX; two sisters-in-law, Linda Shenefield (Gary), and Kathy Sellers (Tom); a brother-in-law, Jim Shumaker; and 3 nieces and 3 nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roland T. Moody (Erika).

Cliff attended Kaley School, Muessel Junior High School, and graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1966. He attended IUSB and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the Vietnam War. After the war, Cliff worked at Associated Truck Lines for 10 years, then Comcast for 20 years. Cliff was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan (as well as sharing his kids' sports interests) and liked attending Ball State football games. He enjoyed and loved the company of his family/grandchildren. His favorite TV shows were Press Your Luck (in the 80's) and Jeopardy.  He was also a wiz at crossword puzzles.

Private family services will be held at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer Chapel, 521 N. William St. with committal services, and burial to follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  There will be another celebration of Cliff’s life on his birthday, July 2nd at a place to be determined.
