Denise Carr Obituary

Denise M. Carr, 66, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in South Bend. She was born on September 27, 1959, in Chicago, IL, and lived a life marked by creativity, kindness, and quiet devotion to others.

Denise was the beloved daughter of the late Rev. Carl L. and Irene (Smith) Rayford, and beloved step-daughter to Mable Rayford. She was a high school graduate and carried herself with dignity and strength throughout her life. Those who knew her will remember her as a selfless and caring woman whose gentle spirit touched many lives. She had a natural gift for making ordinary things beautiful and found joy in expressing herself through crocheting, handmade lamps, and a wide variety of crafting projects. Her hands were rarely still, and her creativity was matched only by the warmth of her heart.

Denise was baptized on June 1, 1967 in Chicago. Church brought her much joy, as she loved music and sang in the choir at New Hope Missionary Church. She also was the lead of a rhythm and blues band, where she won a singing contest. Her favorite band was Maze, featuring Frankie Beverly, whom she met backstage once and swore that she would never wash her cheek. Her song to her daughter was “Me and You Against the World” by Helen Reddy.

For many years, Denise served the South Bend Community School Corporation as a special education paraprofessional, working with children with special needs until her retirement. In that role, she offered patience, encouragement, and steady support to the students she worked with each day. Her work reflected the compassion that defined her life, and she made a lasting difference in the lives of children, families, and coworkers alike. She approached her responsibilities with care and dedication, and she was respected for the kindness and sincerity she brought to her work.

Denise was a devoted mother to her daughter, Karla L. Levy of South Bend, IN, and a proud grandmother to Rashad Thompson, Hassiem Levy, and Saniah Levy. She is also survived by Karla’s father, Larry Herron; her sisters, Carlette Carr of South Bend; Carlene Willis of Toledo, OH; Patricia “Patty” Rayford-Livingston of Detroit, MI; and Thelma Rayford; as well as her brothers, Andrew (Debra) Carr of South Bend, and Michael Rayford of Toledo.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Jerome “Jerry” Carr, Frank Rayford, Gary Rayford, Jimmy Rayford, Milton Rayford, Brenda Carr, Patricia “Pat” Crawley, and Sandra Carr. Denise also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory and the many ways she enriched their lives.
