Dennis Wood Obituary

Dennis Ray Wood, lovingly known as “Papa,” passed away peacefully at his home in Mishawaka, Indiana, on April 21, 2026, at the age of 79.

Dennis was a strong Christian man whose faith guided his life. He knew Jesus as his Savior and now rejoices in His presence, face to face. His life was a reflection of quiet strength, deep love, and unwavering devotion to those closest to him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila Kay Wood, with whom he shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on love, faith, and family — a legacy that will continue for generations. He is also survived by his three children: Tania (Jerome) Calderone, Jeffrey (Connie) Wood, and Matthew (Kiley) Wood.

Dennis was a proud and loving grandfather to six grandchildren: Joseph (Loren) Calderone, Taylor (Colin) Henderson, Alexis (Jesse) Evers, Jai Wood (Hope Pawlak), Kacey Wood, and Mackenzie Wood. He was further blessed with ten great-grandchildren—Ainsley, Breslin, Ara, Jai Jr., Asher, Nova, Kaiden, Andersen, Carson, and Brady—each of whom brought him immense joy.

Denny dedicated 39 years of his life to education as a teacher in the Penn-Harris-Madison School.

He also served as the Penn High School Girl’s Basketball coach from 1988-1996, where he was Coach of the Year three times. He won five Sectional Championships and two Regional Championships.  Dennis proudly served his community as a member of the School City of Mishawaka School Board for two terms.

Known affectionately as “Papa,” Dennis loved his family deeply and without reservation. He was a loyal husband, a devoted father, and a steady, loving presence in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—searching for primitive antiques, spending weekends at garage sales, enjoying vacations with Sheila, sitting on the back porch with his animals, cheering on his favorite favorite teams and most of all, showing up for the people he loved.

Dennis was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

But more than anything, he never missed an opportunity to be present at family gatherings, where his warmth and steady presence meant so much to everyone around him.

To those who knew him best, Dennis was an honest, determined, and strong-willed man with a tender heart. He had a way of making people feel welcome—never meeting a stranger, only friends he hadn’t yet gotten to know.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Paradigm Health and Hospice. They are deeply grateful for his wonderful nurse, Heather, whose compassionate care brought comfort to him and the entire family, and Colin, whose care and dedication in arranging hospice services made it possible for Dennis to return home and be surrounded by peace and loved ones.

Dennis’ legacy is one of faith, love, and devotion. Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace and that his love will live on in each of them.
