Dewey served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Vietnam. He was a Southern Baptist preacher in his earlier years, and never lost his faith, in fact he grew strength from it. He was employed for 34 years at Smurfit-Stone, where he worked as a roll receiver in manufacturing before retiring. Dewey took pride in his work and the steady life he provided for himself and his family. Dewy was also employed as a security guard for a number of years.
Dewey was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Linda Brooks; his twin brother, Lewis Brooks, brothers Denver Canterbury, Clinton Canterbury, Stacy Brooks, Donald Brooks, Benny Brooks, and five sisters, Lora Stewart, Pauline Shiflett, Betty Knospe, Virginia Fitch, and Kathleen McGraw and several nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his stepson, Louis Emberlin Jr, and his daughter in law, Tina, both of South Bend, Indiana, who he always loved as his own; caregiver and friend, Emee Miller; and extended family and friends who will remember him for his simple, steady presence, enduring strength, and tremendous faith.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 1:00p.m., at Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 U.S. 31 S., South Bend, IN 46614. Arrangements have been entrusted to Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46614.
