Donald Herr Obituary

Donald D. Herr, a devoted family man, a dedicated professional, and a man of deep faith, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2023, in Niles. Born on December 23, 1937, to Elmer Herr and Cleo (Grenert) Herr, he was a pillar of his community and a beacon of light to all who knew him.

Donald graduated from Riley High School, where he honed his leadership skills and developed a strong work ethic. He carried these qualities into his professional life, serving as a Manager of Sales at Diversey Lever for 46 years. His dedication and commitment to his work were unmatched, and he retired in 2016 after a long and successful career.

On August 27, 1961, at South Side Church of God, South Bend, Don was united in marriage to Sandra D. Zerbe. Together, they enjoyed 55 years of marriage until her passing on September 23, 2016. Despite the loss, he found love again and was married Iris Rodriguez Herr in March 2019, and she survives. His family was his pride and joy, and he was a loving father to his children, Holly S. Herr, Heidi L. Herr, and Hans C. and Kara Herr. He was a doting grandfather to Kurtis, Evan, and Elizabeth Herr-Knispel, Luisa Jaquez-Herr, and Brendan Herr. He was also a beloved brother to Bonita Lou Babb, Gleora A. Taylor, Marietta Stump, and his half-sister Lela Whitmer, all whom have preceded him in death.
 

He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp. from 1960-1961. Donald's interests extended beyond his professional life. He was an active member of his community, A lifelong member of the South Side Church of God, he sang in the choir and served on the Board of Trustee’s and played on the church’s Softball team for many years. Donald's faith was a cornerstone of his life. His faith-filled nature was evident in his actions and his words, inspiring those around him to live their lives with compassion and kindness.

Don Herr was a man of many hats – a dedicated professional, a loving husband, a caring father, a doting grandfather, a supportive brother, and a faithful friend. His life was a testament to his unwavering faith and his commitment to his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts and lives of those he touched.

Services celebrating Don’s life will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend where visitation will begin at 2:00 until service time.  Private graveside services will be on Monday at Fair Cemetery, North Liberty, IN.
