Dr. Christopher Moran Obituary

Dr. Christopher J. Moran, 78, died Thursday, April 30th, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, children, and grandchildren who loved him dearly.

Christopher was born on April 2, 1948, in Detroit, MI, the oldest child of the late Frank and Susan Moran. He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1966, and from The University of Notre Dame in 1970. Christopher and his wife, Eleanor, then moved to St. Louis so that Christopher could fulfill his calling to become a physician.

After graduating from St. Louis University Medical School in 1974, he completed Residency and Fellowship training in both radiology and neuroradiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University, and then joined the faculty there. During his career at the WashU School of Medicine, he earned Professorships in both Radiology and Neurological Surgery.

Among the many accomplishments throughout his lengthy career, Dr. Moran was internationally recognized for his mastery of flow diverters for intercranial aneurysms. He traveled to more than 200 medical facilities across the globe, serving as a procedure trainer and case proctor, and also delivered numerous lectures on the devices.

His long list of awards includes being named a Fellow of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery, the most prestigious honor granted to members in recognition of professional achievement in the field; additionally, for more than 25 years he served the Radiological Society of North America as a scientific advisor for grants issued by the research and education fund.

He greatly enjoyed helping patients and fellow physicians until his well-deserved retirement in 2025.

Christopher was a true trailblazer in his medical career. His exceptionally long curriculum vitae, containing hundreds of journal articles, abstracts, patents, lectures, and proctored cases, provides just a glimpse of his multitude of accomplishments. This dedication, work-ethic and innovative spirit will be greatly missed, but leave an indelible mark on the world. His teaching style balanced talent, experience, and humility, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of Interventional Neuroradiologists.

Christopher’s proudest accomplishment was his unwavering faith and deep commitment to God. All glory and honor were given to God for every patient that he was able to help and for every successful procedure that he performed. He gave tremendous credit to his beloved wife of almost 57 years for nurturing and strengthening that faith in their family. As a devoted father and grandfather, Christopher’s children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He invested his time in their education and thoughtful guidance, and his unconditional love will forever be missed.

He is survived by his wife: Eleanor; children: John (Molly), William (Courtney), and Mary Catherine; nine grandchildren: Daniel, Jack, Charlie, Luke, Liam, Maisie, Ripley, CJ, and Alexandra; siblings: Jeffrey (Cindy), Susan, and Thomas; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Over many decades, Christopher also developed a strong relationship with the Benedictine monks at St. Louis Abbey and Priory School, where his sons attended.

In remembering Dr. Christopher J. Moran, we honor the vibrant, always willing-to-help spirit that radiated from within him. He had an insatiable curiosity, incredible memory, and zest for healing that was contagious. Whether it was his love for golf, or for growing the world’s best tomatoes, or his ability to make everyone feel valued and appreciated, he had a remarkable way of brightening even the darkest days.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
