Edward John Nieter, 87, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at his residence on March 9, 2026, at 10:02 a.m.
Edward was born on December 7, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana, to Robert Orville and Garnet (Baker) Nieter. He spent most of his life in the South Bend area as an accomplished machine builder in the manufacturing industry before retiring.
On October 4, 1961, Edward married Helga Pfeffer in Göppingen, Germany. The two shared many loving years together until her passing on September 11, 2024.
Edward was a proud United States Army veteran. He was a man who enjoyed music and fellowship. He loved playing guitar and keyboard, as well as singing and ballroom and square-dancing with his wife.
He is survived by his children: Susan (Rick) Donoho of Edwardsburg, Michigan, Debbie (Steve) Marino of South Bend, Indiana and Tyson (Margaret) Nieter of South Bend, Indiana.
Edward was also blessed with seven grandchildren: Joshua, Christian and Jamison of Susan (Rick) Donoho. Justin, Rachel, Michelle and Eli of Debbie (Steve) Marino and three great-grandchildren: Lindy and Elmer (Rachel and Mike) and Miles (Michelle and Jake).
He is further survived by his sister, Jewell Trombley of Bay City, Michigan.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 12, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park Chapel, with Chris Rowe officiating.
Edward will be remembered for his high standards for family, sacrifice for the good of others, love, his curiosity about the world, philosophizing with others and his deeply professed faith in and love for Jesus Christ.
