Elvator Spann Obituary

Mrs. Elvator Spann, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep at 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019. Elvator was born on January 15, 1922 in Jackson, Tennessee to Alex and Daisey (Wilks) Jordan.

 Elvator accepted the Lord at an early age, attending Walnut Grove Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for many years. In 1940, Elvator was united in marriage to Bedford F. Spann in Jackson, Tennessee. Bedford preceded her in death on February 14, 2001. Elvator relocated to Detroit, MI in August 1946, where she and her husband united with Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and again to South Bend, IN in 1991, which she made her home for the next 27 years and attended St. Paul Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Gilbert Washington. While in Detroit, Elvator was employed through AT&T, and later worked in food service as a cafeteria worker. She later retired after many years of faithful service.

Elvator loved to praise God and study His word. She was a talented cook and a gifted artist who enjoyed painting, knitting and sewing, as well as making and reupholstering furniture. She also enjoyed gardening, riding her tractor lawn mower and working outdoors with her husband, going fishing and celebrations with family and friends Elvator was also an impeccable dresser and most importantly, she had a great sense of humor. she enjoyed, Praising God and studying His word.  Elvator led a life full of rich experiences, joy and laughter. She cherished her time spent with family, friends and those she held close. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Elvator Spann is survived by several nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara Jean Spann; four sisters and three brothers: Johnnie, Robert, Luella, Lewis, Beatrice and Daisy Mae. 

As we celebrate her, we who are left behind, are sad to say “so long”, but happy to know she reached her goal and is in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She is rejoicing with her beloved husband Bedford, her daughter Barbara Jean, her parents and all her siblings who went before her. There are nieces and nephews, other family and friends in heaven too. We who remain will see you in the morning Aunt Vate, we know you loved us and we love you more. 

Services for Mrs. Elvator Spann will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 621 Lindsey Street, South Bend. Friends may call on the family for one hour prior to service at the church. Burial to follow at Highland Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
