Evelyn Marie Shaul

Evelyn Marie Shaul, 94, of South Bend, IN passed away peacefully on January 23, 2023 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN. She was born to Earl and Grace (Vanderbeck) Burge on October 12, 1928 in her grandparents’ home next door to her parents’ home in Niles, MI. She was raised in Niles, MI and graduated from Niles Central High School. She worked as a switchboard operator, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. Evelyn moved to South Bend, IN when she married her former husband, Brandt E. Shaul. Together they started Shaul Wholesale, a plumbing supply store. Evelyn’s favorite title was “Mother”. She was happiest raising her three sons. Evelyn eventually worked again as a switchboard operator at Bendix in Mishawaka, IN. After that, she worked for her son as a lighting consultant at U.S. 31 Supply. Evelyn had very fond memories of the many customers, contractors, and employees she met there. She retired after 25 years at U.S. 31 Supply at age 80.

Evelyn also enjoyed summers on Magician Lake, traveling, reading, and antiquing. She had a real passion for animals. She enjoyed feeding the wildlife in her backyard and nurturing injured animals back to health. She was especially close to her last dog, Toby, who holds a very special place in her heart.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Jane Roberts and Dorothy Blume, and her son, Gary B. Shaul.

Evelyn is survived by her sons, David (Chris) Shaul and James (Kathy) Shaul of Niles, MI; grandchildren, Michael (Theresa) Shaul, Jason (Katherine) Shaul, Derek (Renee) Shaul, Corey Shaul, Ryan (Felicia) Shaul, and Audrey (Dustin) Goodard. Evelyn was also proud to be the great grandmother of 12 great grandchildren.

In keeping with Evelyn’s wishes, there will be no visitation. She preferred to be remembered as you knew her. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are handling the arrangements for the family.
