Florence M. Hurcomb, 92, of South Bend, Indiana passed away peacefully at 3:30 pm Sunday, February 7, 2021 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was loved by everyone that knew her and will be greatly missed.
Florence was born February 11, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Elmer Sr. and Florence (Gillmore) Schiek. On July 22, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois Florence was united in marriage to Charles Hurcomb Sr. They were married for nearly 65 years before his passing on March 7, 2012.
Florence graduated with honors in teaching and history from Indiana University-South Bend, in 1971. Florence was the founding member of the Junior Historical Society. Florence retired in 1986 as the Assistant Curator at the Northern Indiana Historical Society. Florence wrote History Highlights for the South Bend Tribune, authored and recorded for History Highlights on WAUS. She was the Pioneer Woman at Navarre Cabin, Leeper Park in South Bend and made many presentations to schools and churches.
Florence (Nana) acted as Google before Google was invented for late night term papers for her eight grandchildren.
Florence is a current member of Grace United Methodist Church, South Bend, Indiana and a former member of Zion United Church of Christ, Wakarusa, Indiana
Florence is survived by her four children, Charles (Catherine) Hurcomb Jr. of South Bend, Cynthia (Stanley) Klein of Mishawaka, Claudia Wraight of South Bend and Christopher (Liz) Hurcomb of Burleson, Texas. Eight grandchildren, Matthew Deardorff of Terre Haute, Nicholas Klein of Wakarusa, Elizabeth Clayton of Osceola, Corey Hurcomb of South Bend, Heather Lewis of Muncie, Christopher Hurcomb Jr, Arlington, TX, Carrianne Sale, Burleson, Tx and Drew Wraight of Mishawaka; eleven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and her niece, Robin Schlauch of College Park, Maryland.
Florence is proceeded in death by her grandson Sean Hurcomb: her brother Elmer (Bud) Schiek, Jr. and son-in-law, Dale Smith.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday May, 15 2021 at Zion United Church of Christ, 12298 New Road, Wakarusa, IN 46573, where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services. Burial will take place at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Wakarusa.
