Frederick Charles Owens

Frederick Charles Owens, affectionately known as “Big O” exchanged this life for eternity on May 27, 2020. “Big “O” was the epitome of manhood; working tirelessly to provide for his family, and sowing into the lives of all whom crossed his path. He was a magnificent husband, father; grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. 

Frederick was born April 11, 1958 to Robert Hunt and Annie Owens, in South Bend. On September 12, 1987, he united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Judy Collins Mitchem. This union produced one son, Frederick C. Owens, Jr., daughters, Alisa A. Owens and Rebecca L. Owens. His wife, Judy Collins Owens and son, Frederick Owens Jr. preceded him in death; as well as his grandmother, Lou-Ella McCuller and brother, Douglas Owens. 

Frederick was a man of honor and dignity. His love and affection for his girls, Alisa & Rebecca was indescribable. He model through words and actions, the legacy he wanted to pass on. He was an avid Chicago Bears Fan, and enjoyed grilling for his family. “Big O” was a graduate of Washington High School, later pursuing his Associate in Business. Throughout his life, “Big O” coached and mentored many young men within the community. His loving spirit, words of strength, and loyalty touched the lives of many. 

Frederick’s legacy lives on through his mother, Annie Owens-McBroom; daughters, Alisa A. Owens and Rebecca L. Owens; siblings, Roderick (Wanda) Owens, Gerard (Sharon) Newhouse, Anita Owens and Benita Owens; brother-in-laws, Lynn, Rick (Kathy), and Ronald Mitchem; sister-in-law, Jill Owens; four grandchildren, Dakotah, Rasean, Kamrynn and Karter; nephews: William Charles Owens, Roderick Owens, Jr.,Gerard Newhouse, Jr., Denzel Mitchem; nieces Rhonda Owens, Linnea Mitchem, Retha Owens, Lou Ell Lyn Newhouse, Hannah Mitchem; special nephews and niece, Tremaine Owens, Ronald Mitchem, Jr., and Rochelle (Marcus) Smith.

Family & friends may express condolences on June 6, 2020, with visitation at 10:00 a.m., and services at 11:00 a.m. All services will be held at Palmer Funeral Home- West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN.  Minister Dennis Patton, officiating.
