Frederick Sprunger Obituary

Frederick Lynn Sprunger, 96, of Bluffton, IN, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. He was born November 25, 1924, in Berne, Indiana to Leo and Mary (Wanner) Sprunger.  He married Shirley Ann Schug of Berne in 1948 at the First Church of the Nazarene.  She preceded him in death in 1986. Fred later married Joyce Wanner of Berne, IN who survives.

Fred’s early years were spent in Kempton, IN where his parents served as Pastors of the Friends Church.  He attended school in Kokomo, IN., and graduated from Geneva, IN High School in 1941. Fred was a WWII veteran, having enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in 1943 and served at several U.S. Base Camps from Texas to Maine. After discharge in 1946, Fred partnered with his father in a construction business in Monroe, IN where he developed his carpentry and masonry skills.  In 1950, Fred enrolled in Purdue University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering along with a Master’s in Education degree in 1954.  Fred worked in the military electronics industry until his retirement from the Raytheon Electronic Systems Co., in 1990. Fred spent his retirement years volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in the U.S. and Canada and supported Project Mercy and Christian Literature for Africa in Fort Wayne, IN.  Fred was a member of the Church of the Nazarene for most of his life actively serving churches in Berne, Lafayette, Montpelier, Marion and Huntington, IN. Whether he served as Janitor, Board Member, Church Treasurer or Sunday School Teacher, his mission was to serve the Lord.

Along with his spouse Joyce, Fred is survived by his sons; Fritz (Judy) Sprunger, of Clearwater, FL., Jim (Terri) Sprunger of Wabash, IN and daughter Jacquie (Randy) Hartman of Vicksburg, MI.  Fred is also survived by eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his two brothers: Virgil Sprunger of Lincoln, IL, and David Sprunger of Keokuk, IA.

No services will be held at this time, the family may hold a celebration of life at a later date.  Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences can be made to the Sprunger family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
