George Smith Obituary

Mr. George A. Smith, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at the Hospice House of South Bend.  George was born on May 26, 1953, in Little Rock, AR.  He was the only child to George A. and Masie Smith.

George was a resident of South Bend since 1960.  George graduated from J.W. Riley High and went on to attend college for a while.  He also work as a laborer paving roads for many years until he retired.  In recent years George gave his life to Christ and kept a relationship with God to the end.

George was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be truly missed by all who knew him.  George was a strong man who fought valiantly till the end.  Even when faced with his illness, he stayed steadfast.  His family would often hear him saying, “I’m a thoroughbred, I’m in this fight to the end.” 

He is survived by his loving wife, Gail Douglas-Smith whom he was united in marriage to in June of 2014.  George is also survived by his children, Quitina Smith, Julius Smith, Dennotus Crumbley, LaKesha Moore, Jessica Moore, Quentin Douglas, Willie Hawkins all of South Bend, IN.  George Smith III, Shahera Smith-Hughes, and Virgie Coleman of Indianapolis.  Brice Moore of Arizona, as well as a host of beautiful grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family members and friends.  George also leaves behind his longtime friends Allie Harris, Joseph Herron and Bun Swanson.

George was preceded in death by both his parents George A. and Masie Smith as well as his grandson Anthony Hughes Jr.

Services for Mr. George A. Smith, Jr.  will be held privately. Palmer Funeral Homes - West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online expressions of sympathy may be left at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
