Gerald “Jerry” B. Wright, of Edwardsburg, MI, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at the age of 81. He was born in Bramwell, WV, on April 24, 1941 to the late Charles Neil and Violet Margaret (Underwood) Wright.
He was a 1959 graduate of Elkhart High School and a graduate of Ball State University in 1963, earning his bachelor’s degree in teaching. Jerry would go on to teach for 33 years in Edwardsburg Public Schools where he taught 4th and 5th grade and also taught for 7 years for Riverview Elementary through Elkhart Public Schools.
On April 9, 1982, he was united in marriage to Nancy (Yaw) Mortimer, who survives. Also surviving are his son, Scott Wright of Hawaii; stepsons, Jeff Mortimer of Cleveland, OH, and David (Kelly) Mortimer of Edwardsburg, MI; eight grandchildren, Brittney, Brandon, Keilani, Leilani Wright, Casey Leiva, Sydney, Jeff, and Nick Mortimer; two great-grandchildren, Savanaha and Chancelor; and his sister, Patricia Wright of South Bend. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Benjamin Mortimer.
Jerry was an avid fisherman, enjoying his time on Eagle Lake as well as trips to Ohio and Lake Michigan. He and Nancy enjoyed vacationing in Florida over the years. He coached both girls softball and junior high girls basketball. He officiated girls softball and boys baseball in Edwardsburg. In 1963/64, he won the Elkhart city softball junior high championship. Jerry was also a member of the Edwardsburg American Legion.
In keeping with Jerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are being held at this time. The family will be planning a Celebration of Life at a later date. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
