Gloria Decker Obituary
Gloria Jean Decker, 92, passed away at 4:20 am Sunday, January 9, 2022, while a resident at the Auguste’s Cottage Memory Care at Trailpoint Village, South Bend.
Gloria was born May 24, 1929, in Elkhart to the late Perry and Virginia (Sniadecki) Bunch and remained a lifelong area resident.
On September 16, 1950, in Mishawaka, Gloria married her true love, Donald L. Decker, enjoying 62 years of marriage prior to his passing on September 22, 2012.
Gloria is survived by her two children, Timothy (Judy) Decker of Bremen and Deborah (Timothy) Szalai of South Bend; and six grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Putz, Natalie (Eric) Dolson, Jordann (Ericca) Decker, Adam Szalai, Taylor Szalai, Austin (Alex) Szalai; as well as seven great grandchildren, Carter, Jude, and Rohan Putz, Ava and Parker Dolson, and Jude and Rocco Szalai. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Irvin and Robert Bunch; and four sisters, Joan Strope, Lorraine Martin, Shirley Friesner and Marilyn Rickey.
Gloria graduated from Jimtown High School, where she was quoted in her yearbook as saying, “I speak, act and behave just as I please.” She was last employed at the St. Joseph County Circuit Court under the late Judge Montgomery, where she had been given the nickname “Mother Superior”. She retired in 1982.
Gloria and Don had many great memories from their time as members of Morris Park Country Club. Many summers were spent at their lake cottage on Donnell Lake in Vandalia, Michigan. She was happiest sharing all the lake activities with family and friends. Later in life, they became snowbirds for 13 years, spending winters in Ft. Myers, Florida. Her favorite activities were going to the beach and pool, golfing and socializing with friends, both old and new. Mostly, Gloria loved entertaining and staying active.
Gloria was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services for Gloria will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, January 13, 2022, in the Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Terry Fisher will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 – 11:00 am Thursday in the funeral home prior to services.
