Gloria Kay Starks Obituary

Gloria Kay Starks, age 86, passed into the presence of the Lord on February 9, 2024, in Granger, Indiana. Born on a glorious Easter morning in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Royle and Elaine Sprunger, she was affectionately called Katie throughout childhood, Kay from college years and beyond, and beloved Mutti to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and countless others she loved and cared for in her lifetime. Kay's love for the Lord shone bright throughout her life in everything she did.

Kay grew up with four siblings - Carolyn, Sharon, Nancy, and Keith - enjoying the laughter and antics of a large, active, loving household. Kay graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne, earned a BA in Elementary Education from Wheaton College, and went on to get her MA in Education from Purdue University. She lived out her love of learning as a public-school teacher, preschool teacher and director, daycare director, and children’s ministry director.

While at Wheaton College, Kay met David Starks and the two married on June 7, 1958. They were a wonderful team for sixty-five years, welcoming three daughters while pursuing higher education, and their fourth daughter after settling in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They faithfully served their community in Ann Arbor together from 1967-1997, graciously extending heart and home to many throughout those years. Kay is cherished and remembered for her warmth, gentleness, hospitality, and unhurried approach to life, especially as she nurtured and cared for little ones.

Kay and David retired in Granger, Indiana, where Kay continued serving children at Cornerstone Community Church and worked with her sister, Nancy, to lead Bible studies in area nursing homes with Gospel City Church. Mutti was proud of everything her grandchildren did. She edited papers, cheered on basketball games, attended concerts, and supported their passions enthusiastically!

Kay is survived by her daughters and sons-in law Joy and Charlie Brainer, Dawn and Kent Chambers, Julie and Kevin Abbott and Sara and Doug Zimmerman; grandchildren Amy (Jude), David (Hannah), Michelle, Zach (Dani), Peter (Susie), Suzanne (Ethan), Kayla, Will (Hayley), Daniel, Elaina, Sam, Nathan, Luke, Ben, Grace, Annemarie, and Gloria; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters Carolyn (Phil) Munro, Nancy (Dan) Kletzing, brother-in-law Dennis (Linda) Gibson, sister-in-law Melodie Sprunger, and sister-in-law Carolyn Starks. Kay was preceded in death by her husband David, parents Royle and Elaine, sister Sharon Gibson, brother Keith Sprunger, sister-in-law Lois Stubblefield, and brother in-law Frank Starks.
