Gordon "Bud" Duerr, Jr. Obituary

Gordon John “Bud” Duerr Jr. passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, in South Bend, Indiana , surrounded by those who meant the most to him—his sons, Gordon John “Jay” Duerr III and
Edward Bradley “Brad” Duerr, and his longtime partner, Laura Swallow.

Bud was born on July 9, 1945, in Glendale, California, to Gordon John Duerr Sr. and Patience “Patsy” Engels Duerr (Fiedler). He graduated from Syracuse University and, rather than following
a conventional path, he chose one that reflected both his adventurous spirit and deep sense of duty—enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Stationed at North Island in San Diego, California during the
Vietnam War, Bud served as an S-2 carrier pilot specializing in anti-submarine warfare. He took his role seriously, yet never lost his signature sense of humor, often remarking that under his watch, “not one sub ever got through our west coast safety net.”

Bud frequently reflected on how his time in the Navy shaped him, especially the lessons learned from his first night carrier landing—an experience that instilled in him confidence, resilience, and patience in the face of life’s challenges. He often likened Naval carrier flying to life itself, saying that the only real option was to succeed and persevere; the alternative, as he would put it, was “dumping it in the ocean,” which he always assured was not a good choice.

Following his honorable service, Bud joined his father in the family business, Logansport Machine Company. There, he built a reputation as a respected leader in the machine tool and hydraulic fluid power industry, mentoring many along the way, including both his sons, before eventually retiring. To say he left his mark would be an understatement.

Bud lived life the way he approached everything—fully, enthusiastically, and with a great sense of humor. He was kind, outgoing, and genuinely loved being around people. If you knew Bud, you likely have a story—and it’s probably a good one.

Above all, Bud loved his family. He shared a special bond with his sons and took immense pride in his grandchildren: Sadie Grace Duerr and Olivia Kate Duerr of The Woodlands, Texas, and Gordon John “Gordy” Duerr IV and Paul Greyson Duerr of Westfield, Indiana.

He also found great joy in life’s finer (and sometimes not-so-fine) pleasures—martinis and wine with Laura and friends, especially in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada; golfing around the world; and spending time with his best friend and brother-in-law of 65 years, Dr. Richard H. “Dick” Van Verst. And, of course, there was the occasional blackjack game… though “occasional” may depend on who you ask.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Penelope Anne Duerr (Van Verst).

He is survived by his sons, Jay Duerr (Kathy) and Brad Duerr (Shana); his beloved grandchildren; his life partner, Laura Swallow; his brother-in-law, Dr. Richard H. Van Verst; and his nieces, Katie McConnell (Darrell) and Jennifer Vande Lune (Todd). Bud leaves behind a legacy of leadership, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. A private family service will take place at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois, where Bud will be laid to rest alongside his parents and sister. Palmer Funeral Home--River Park Chapel, South Bend, IN, is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, Bud would prefer that you raise a glass in his honor—or consider a donation to your favorite charity or local United Way.
