Grace L. Skoner

Grace Skoner, 98, of Mishawaka passed peacefully June 29, 2022.  Grace was born on April 1, 1924, to James Bornhoeft (Sr.) and Elizabeth Bornhoeft (Hoppe) in Chicago, IL.  There she met her beloved husband Norbert J. Skoner.  Upon his return from WWII, Grace and Norbert settled in the Michiana area.

Grace is preceded in death by her husband Norbert, siblings Dorothy, Marie and James, daughter-in-law Bonnie, and grandson Heath.   

Her life will continue to be cherished by her son Thomas Skoner; daughters Patricia Stanz (James) & Barbara Knutson (Bruce); grandchildren Shane Skoner, Brandon Knutson (Kelly), Britt Platt (Andrew), Christopher Stanz; as well as four great-grandchildren Brody and Kendall Knutson and Carter and Connor Platt.

Grace, affectionately referred to by many as “Grammy,” loved being with her family more than anything. She showed love most visibly by cooking delicious meals and baking sweet treats for family and friends. She continued to cook for family two nights a week into her 90s. During the holidays, she was known for baking a broad array of Christmas cookies to share with friends and neighbors.  Her baking abilities even earned her the title of “Cookie Lady” by the South Bend Tribune in 1989.

Grace enjoyed caring for her family, nourishing them with food, and sharing stories.  She enjoyed photography and collectibles.  She loved all of the dogs that she had during her life, especially the Yorkies.  Grace always put others before herself and deeply cared for those close to her.

Funeral followed by Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday July 6, 2022, at Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S Twyckenham Dr South Bend, IN 46614. The family will host a visitation prior to the funeral at Grace United Methodist from 9:30am -11:00am.
