Grayson R. Warren, Jr., affectionately known as Sonny, passed away on April 20, 2026, in South Bend, Indiana, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of faith, wisdom, and love that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Sonny was born on August 18, 1940, in Paducah, Kentucky, to Grayson R. Warren, Sr. and Ellen Warren, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up surrounded by family ties that remained important throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Etta Jenelle (Thomas J.) Brown. He is survived by his brother, Lloyd Michael (Jenny) Warren, his daughter, Kimberly M. (Ricky) Erby, and his son, Duane L. (Kimberlie) Warren. His family was a source of pride and joy, and the bonds he shared with them reflected the steady, caring nature for which he was known.
Sonny spent his early years in an environment that helped shape his character and work ethic. He attended Benjamin Harrison Elementary, Muessel Jr. High School, and Central High School, where he developed the foundation for a life marked by perseverance and responsibility. Those who knew him understood that he carried himself with quiet strength and a humble spirit, qualities that stayed with him throughout his life.
His work history reflected a lifetime of dedication and service. Sonny worked at Empire Box Factory, Torrington Factory, and Sears & Roebuck. He also sold insurance for Commonwealth and worked at Bendix Factory for five years. Later, he gave 17 years of faithful service to the South Bend Community School Corp. He retired in 1992 after years of hard work and commitment. His professional life was a testament to his reliability and his willingness to do what was needed to provide for his family and contribute to his community.
Faith was central to Sonny’s life. He was a Christian and joined Olivet AME Church at the age of 12 under the leadership of Jay Solomon Benns. That early decision shaped the course of his life and remained a guiding force in the years that followed. His faith was not merely something he professed, but something he lived through his conduct, his words, and his care for others. He was known as a man who trusted God, leaned on prayer, and encouraged those around him with a steady and sincere spirit.
Sonny was best described as wise, FAITH-FILLED, and loving. He shared his wisdom with others, it came through in the way he listened, the advice he offered, and the calm presence he brought to those around him. His faith was evident in his daily life, and his love for his family and community was unwavering. He had a way of making people feel seen and valued, and that gift will be remembered long after his passing.
He enjoyed a life rooted in simple values, meaningful relationships, and steadfast devotion. He enjoyed being with his family and friends, sharing his wittiness, jokes and some untruths. His presence was a blessing to his loved ones, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
As the poet Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Sonny made people feel cared for, respected, and loved. That gift, more than anything, will remain as part of his enduring legacy.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His children, his grandchildren; Shammon (Elliott) Sanders, Duane (Apryll) Warren, II, Austin Erby, Aisha Erby; Great-grandchildren: Duane Warren, III, Austin Erby, Jr., Laithyn Warren, Tymir White, Clarke Rouse and Braylin Sanders. He had a hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, too numerous to list here; but we're thankful for you all sharing the same love we have for our dad.
Special friends; Jacqueline Warren and Barbara Townsend. His brothers from other mothers: Donald 'Duck' Timms, Walter Overton, Leroy King, Sr., John 'Jake' Johnson, Larry Shell and Donald Smith; and so many others who are always available, whenever called.
Grayson R. Warren, Jr. will be remembered with gratitude and affection by his family, friends, church family, and all whose lives he touched. Though he has completed his earthly journey, the example of his life will continue to inspire those who follow. His was a life well lived, rooted in faith and marked by love, and his memory will forever be a blessing.

Funeral Services will be at 11am on Friday, May 1, 2026, in Olivet AME Church where family and friends may begin to gather at 9am to visit with the family.
Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.
