Harold Van Dyken Obituary

Harold P. Van Dyken, age 76, passed away on December 18, 2025. He was born on January 27,
1949, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to the late Harold A. Van Dyken and Arlene (Joldersma) Van Dyken.

Harold was proud to claim the title of United States Marine. Carrying with him the discipline, strength, and integrity that defined his service. After completing his military duty, he pursued his passion for craftsmanship by being part of the designing and manufacturing of a wooden acoustic drum called the Gato drum. His work gained national attention when the drums were featured in the June 1978 issue of Playboy Gifts for Dads & Grads. Playboy wrote, “Both rock and jazz buffs will dig banging these multitoned mahogany and redwood Gato drums, and devil take the neighbors.”

At the age of 40, Harold embarked on a new chapter, returning to school to earn his Registered Nursing degree. He went on to serve as both a hospice nurse and in the nephrology field, retiring after 20 years of compassionate and dedicated service. His ability to reinvent himself, paired with his deep empathy for others, left a lasting impact on countless patients and families.

On May 30, 1987, Harold was united in marriage to Rae Johnson in Kalamazoo. She survives him and cherishes the many years they shared together. Harold is also survived by his sister, MaryLynn, and her husband, Joseph O’Connor, along with their children, Ian and Kate O’Connor. He leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including many cousins from the Clark, Henry, and Van Dyken families.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation will take place. Harold will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date.
