Helen E. Berg, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Wellbrooke of South Bend, where she had resided for the past several years. Helen was born on March 24, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, to Carl and Emma Holm.
Helen was raised in South Bend and graduated from Greene High School in 1949. Following graduation, she worked at Sears, later as an insurance clerk, and eventually at 1st Source Bank. She dedicated many years to the bank, serving as operations manager of the mortgage loan department from September 1970 until her retirement in January 1987.
On July 24, 1965, Helen married Henry R. “Hank” Berg. Together, they raised their blended family of four children—Aida, Jose, Reta, and Kerry—into a loving family. Helen was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was also deeply devoted to her faith and her churches, Faith Lutheran Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church, throughout her life. In her later years, she developed an interest in quilting, adding to her hobbies of knitting, crocheting, crewel and playing piano.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Emma Holm; her husband, Henry R. Berg; her son, Jose Berg; and her siblings, Richard Holm (Shar) and Sharon Waldron (Bill). Helen is survived by her children: Aida Cerney (Col. Robert Cerney), Reta Dzierla (Sandy), and Kerry Berg (Jackie). She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Jenny Stearns (Bret), Robert Cerney Jr. (Connie), Paul White (Amanda), Kassy Kickbush, Holly Widmyer (Justin), Jamile Tomlin (Brian), Raymond Berg, and Andrew Berg (Kelsey), as well as her fifteen great-grandchildren.
