Herbert R. Watchorn

Herbert R. Watchorn, 73, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, May 12, 2021 at his residence in South Bend, IN. He was born on September 7, 1947 in Sault Sainte Marie, MI, to William and Edith (Letson) Watchorn, both of whom preceded him in death.

On June 14, 1999, Herbert married the former M. Ruby Chavez, who survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Sonya Schrock and Deanna Watchorn, both of Elkhart, IN; son, Tim Watchorn of Elkhart, IN; grandchildren, Nicholas Miller, Bethany Watkins, and Morgan Schrock; great-grandchildren, Maddox, Xavier, Elliot, Arya, Raven and Ezra; sister, Freeda Watchorn of Texas; and brothers, Harold (Shirley) Watchorn of Elkhart, IN, and Albert Watchorn of Michigan. In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Lily; sister, Hazel Sanders; and brothers, Jim Watchorn and William Watchorn.

Herbert was employed as a mechanic at Sears, Roebuck and Company in Elkhart, IN, for 35 years. Herbert honorably served his country in the United States Army. He attended Oak Creek Community Church in Mishawaka. He enjoyed fast-pitch softball and bowling. In his spare time, he worked on automobiles. Herbert also enjoyed playing guitar and singing. He was never one to turn down a lunch with friends or fellow veterans, and was always ready to help anyone in need. Herbert was well-known as a big jokester—something for which he will be remembered.

In accordance with Herbert’s wishes, no services will be held. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family.
