Hiteko Harris, aged 99, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, in Elkhart, Indiana. Born on August 28, 1926, in the lively city of Sendai, Japan, Hiteko's life journey was a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Her mother, Tatsui Shoji, instilled in her a relentless work ethic and a passion for life that she carried throughout her existence.
A proud laborer, Hiteko dedicated many years of service to Giant Snacks until her retirement in 1987. Beyond her professional endeavors, she was a woman of many interests. Hiteko had the greenest thumb around; her extraordinary ability to grow the most stunning flowers, particularly orchids, was admired by all who knew her. Neighbors and friends often reminisced about the beauty and serenity of her garden—a true oasis that reflected the care she poured into every blossom.
No one could resist a good garage sale with Hiteko. Her keen eye for treasures and bargains was unmatched, and she embraced the joy of the hunt with excitement and finesse. Many will remember the laughter and stories shared during those early morning adventures.
Her zest for life was not just limited to daylight hours. Hiteko enjoyed the thrill of the casino, where her sparkling personality and unwavering optimism made her a favorite among her fellow enthusiasts. Friends and family recall her ability to light up the room with her playful attitude and infectious smile.
Among her many talents, Hiteko was also a very good cook, and nothing made her happier than sharing her culinary creations with loved ones. Her dishes were not only a feast for the palate but also an expression of her love and care.
Hiteko leaves behind a legacy of love and joy within her beloved family. She was a cherished mother to her daughter, Betty Jean Harris, and her sons, William Harris and Michael Malave. Her three grandchildren, Linsey, Mikaela, Alex, and eight great-grandchildren were the apples of her eye, each holding a special place in her heart.
A private family niche placement will take place at Southlawn Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home – Bubb Chapel is honored to be assisting the family with final arrangements.
