James Berta Obituary

James Edward Berta, of Empire MI, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2021, at the age of 83, after a fall. He was born in South Bend, IN on June 26, 1937 to Julius and Irene Berta, both of whom preceded him in death.

A graduate of St. Joseph High School, Class of 1955, Jim went on to serve in the Navy from 1956-1958, stationed in San Francisco. He had a long career at Wheelabrator Technologies. He was an expert craftsman, building clocks, Shaker style boxes, and furniture.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Susan (Kevin) Israel, and three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michelle, and Stephanie. He also leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Peter, Anthony, Gregory, and a baby girl on the way.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 226 N. Hill Street, South Bend, IN, where a visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Rev. Kevin Russeau, C.S.C., will officiate the services. Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
