James R. Langford

June 12, 1937 ~ March 3, 2022 (age 84)

James “Jim” R. Langford, 84, residing in South Bend, passed away at 3:50am on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at his home. He was born on June 12, 1937, to the late Walter and Alice “Dit” (Joubert) Langford and has remained a lifelong area resident.

Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Lois (Bill) Berry. He is survived by his loving companion, Nimbilasha Cushing; his four children, Jeremy (Liz Collier) Langford, Joshua (Cathy) Langford, Trevor Langford and Emily Langford; his six grandchildren; his brother, Walter Langford; his sister, Libby (John) Naimo; as well as his dear friend, Jill Justice Langford.

Jim graduated from Holy Cross Grade School and St. Joseph High School. He was an avid tennis player and won four South Bend and one Indiana championships. He entered the University of Notre Dame on a journalism scholarship in 1955. After a year, he joined the Dominican Order, and in the next seven years, earned an undergraduate and four graduate degrees. After serving four years as a priest, he requested and was granted a dispensation from the Vatican. Jim went on to a career in book publishing at Doubleday, the University of Michigan Press, and from 1974 to1999, as Director of the University of Notre Dame Press. He was a concurrent assistant professor in the Core Course at the University of Notre Dame. Selected as a Hesburgh Lecturer, he was awarded a Kaneb Award for outstanding teaching at the university.

In 1994, Jim and Jill Langford co-founded a day camp on 16 acres near Lakeville, to serve inner-city children from Michiana and as far away as Chicago. In its 17 years, There Are Children Here hosted more than 30,000 child visits and more than 5,000 volunteers who worked with the children.

Following his retirement from the University of Notre Dame in 1999, Jim worked as a consulting editor for the Rowman and Littlefield Publishing Group before founding, with Tim Carroll, Corby Publishing Company in South Bend.

In addition to publishing thousands of books by a wide range of prominent authors in fields from science to spirituality to sports, Jim authored 12 books, five of them on his beloved Chicago Cubs. Few things brought him greater satisfaction than living long enough to see the Cubs win the World Series in 2016 after a 108-year dry spell. Two of his books achieved best-seller status, and he was always delighted that his Galileo, Science, and the Church has remained in print since 1966. With his son, Jeremy, he wrote The Spirit of Notre Dame and, at the urging of family, shared his extraordinary journey and search for happiness in his memoir, The Times of My Life.

In the face of lifelong physical and health challenges, Jim’s faith, intellect, and humor always shined through. There’s no doubt he’s enjoying the heavenly banquet – and even holding court – with all those he loved and admired.
