James E. Salyer, 86 years old, passed away on July 29th at his home surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on October 2, 1935 in Salyersville, KY to the late John and Dora (Adams) Salyer. He has lived in North Liberty most of his life. On August 13, 1955 in Marks, Mississippi, Jim and Lillian R. Allsop were united in marriage.
Along with Lillian, his loving wife of 66 years, Jim is survived by eight of their nine children, Wade (Bonnie) Salyer of Plymouth, Christine (Jeffrey) Houston of Plymouth, Sarah (Jeffrey) Sarber of Plymouth, Sherri Menefee of North Liberty, Linda (Jeffrey) Lewis of North Liberty, Amy (Kevin) Bonine of Culver, Melanie Salyer of North Liberty, and Mindy (Alex Batiz) Salyer of Chicago; 16 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by their daughter, Rebecca Salyer; six sisters, Irene, Geneva, Mamie, Cauline, Grace and Lucy; and two brothers, Grant and John.
Jim retired from Uniroyal where he was a Journeyman Pipefitter after 38 years. He was also a lifelong self-employed farmer. Jim loved fishing, hunting and sports. He coached baseball for twenty-five years. He also loved spending time with his family. Especially during the holidays and cooking Christmas breakfast. Jim loved and believed in Jesus. He was the Sunday School Superintendent at Grace Lutheran church in Lakeville and North Liberty. His favorite Bible verse was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not die but have everlasting life.”
Funeral services held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 6th at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 605 S. Center Street, Bremen, IN. Pastor Neil Wonnacott will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Porter Rae Cemetery, within Potato Creek State Park, North Liberty. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. -7 p.m. on Friday, August 5th at the Palmer Funeral Home, within the Palmer Community Complex, 601 N. Michigan Street, Lakeville. Friends may also visit with the family beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
