James Sweeney Obituary

James P. Sweeney, known lovingly as Jim, passed away on June 19, 2023, in Granger, Indiana, at the age of 82. Born on May 13, 1941, in South Bend, Indiana, Jim was the son of the late Harold F. and Doris V. (Miller) Sweeney.

Jim is survived by his son, Jim L. (Myra) Sweeney of Granger, and his cherished grandchildren, Darby and Aidan Sweeney. He also leaves behind his sisters, Mary (Mike) Rienks of South Bend and Judy Pyclik of Huron, Ohio, along with his brothers, Patrick Sweeney of Paola, Kansas, and Thomas Sweeney of South Bend. Jim was preceded in death by his brother, William Sweeney.

A proud 1959 graduate of Riley High School, Jim went on to attend Purdue University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business. While at Purdue, he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Jim was a self-made man, receiving a partial scholarship and selling Collier’s Encyclopedias to earn money to pay his way through college. His strong work ethic and determination served him well throughout his life.

Jim spent 32 successful years as a Sales Representative for Proctor & Gamble, retiring in 1997. He was a dedicated U.S. Army veteran, serving his country with honor. In addition to his professional career, Jim was an active member of the Grocer's Marketing & Retail Association (GMRA), where he made lasting connections and friendships.

Jim had a passion for collecting trains, and his collection was well-known among fellow enthusiasts. One of his trains was even used for an Eagle Scout project and is now proudly displayed at A Rosie's Place. His love for trains brought joy not only to him but also to those who had the opportunity to share in his hobby.

A devoted Purdue fan, Jim could often be found cheering on his beloved Boilermakers. His enthusiasm for his alma mater was infectious, and he took great pride in the accomplishments of Purdue's athletic teams and its students.

Those who knew Jim will remember him as a kind, generous, and hardworking man who put family first. His love for his son and grandchildren was evident in everything he did, and he always made sure they knew just how much they meant to him. Jim's memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
