James "Chris" Hedman

James Christopher Hedman, known to most as Chris, passed away surrounded by loved ones on July 22, 2026, in South Bend, Indiana, at the age of 71.

Born on December 23, 1954, in South Bend, Indiana, he was the son of the late Garland & Joanne (Heddens) Hedman. Chris grew up in the South Bend area and was a proud graduate of John Adams High School. Those who loved Chris knew they could always count on him. He wasn't one to seek attention or praise, but he showed his love through his actions—by lending a helping hand, fixing what was broken, and quietly being there for the people who mattered most. It was in those everyday moments that his character shined the brightest.

Chris devoted more than 40 years of his life to his work as a Master Auto Technician, spending over 30 years with Gurley Leep Automotive Group. He took great pride in his work and earned the respect of coworkers and customers alike for his skill, knowledge, and unwavering dedication. Whether diagnosing a problem, repairing a vehicle, or sharing his expertise with others, Chris approached every job with patience and professionalism. His long career was a testament not only to his talent, but also to his strong work ethic and commitment to doing things the right way.

Outside of work, Chris found joy in life's simple pleasures. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling leagues and the friendships they fostered. He also loved gardening, mushroom hunting, working on old cars, and spending time around engines and racing. Two of his favorite cars were his 1966 GTO and his 1971 Road Runner, and he especially enjoyed taking his Road Runner to race at the Osceola Drag Strip. He was also a fan of the South Bend Motor Speedway and looked forward each year to celebrating the Fourth of July.

Above all else, Chris loved his family. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and loved ones. Few things brought him greater happiness than cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events. His family was the center of his life, and he will always be remembered for the love, pride, and unwavering support he gave to each of them.

His memory will be cherished by his surviving children: Melissa (Dr. John) Jung, Michael (Brittany) Hedman, Rebecca (Chris) Delgado, Dianna (Damian) Hedman; daughter-in-law, Angela Parson; and mother of his children, Deb Lenardson.
 He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Kaitlynn (Jason), Alexa, Brianna, Ava, Avery, Hailey, Claire, Joseph, Caleb, and Miguel; his brothers: Larry (Mila) Hedman, Joe (Lavinda) Hedman, and Dave Henry; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Joseph Hedman; his son-in-law, Aaron Gushwa; and his brothers, Greg Hedman and Patrick Hedman.

Chris Hedman will be remembered as a hardworking man with a generous spirit, a love for classic cars, and a deep devotion to his family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A time to visit with the family will be on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026 from 12 – 2 p.m. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. all being held at Palmer Funeral Home – Bubb Chapel, 3910 N. Main St. Mishawaka, IN 46545. A procession to Fairview Cemetery will immediately follow the service.
