James "Jim" Young, Sr Obituary

James “Jim” M. Young Sr., passed away on April 18, 2026, in Mishawaka, Indiana, at the age of 79.

Jim was the husband of Sun Yong Hwang, whom he married on October 25, 1985, in Mishawaka, until Sun’s passing on April 10, 2025. He was the son of the late Ernest Young and the late Hattie (Dzialakiewicz) Fye. He was also a father to James “Jim” Young Jr., Jeff (Heather) Young, and Jasmine Young, and a stepfather to Edward (Jennifer) Gaddey. Jim is also survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jeff Jr., and Austin, as well as his step-grandchildren, Evan and Eli; his nephew, Ernest “Moosie” Young III; and his niece, Annie Young. He is also survived by his brother, Ernest Young Jr., and his wife Kathleen. His life long friend Billy Long will also miss him.

Jim graduated from Mishawaka High School with the Class of 1964 and soon after served his country in the Indiana National Guard. He carried the discipline and responsibility of that experience throughout his life. Jim worked for Wheelabrator‑Frye until its closure, continued his career at SKF Bearing in Bremen until they closed, and then spent over 20 years at Master Built serving as a Quality Manager, a role he held with pride and commitment until the time of his passing. Jim truly enjoyed going to work, and his strong work ethic and dependable nature earned the respect of those who knew him professionally.

Outside of work, Jim was a man of many talents and interests. He especially enjoyed his wife’s cooking and would often help prepare egg rolls with her. In one memorable effort, they made more than 1,800 egg rolls to sell. Jim was also known for being inventive and mechanically minded, always tinkering with things and finding ways to make them better. His curiosity and practical skill were part of what made him so remarkable to those around him.

Jim and Sun were also proud business owners in the Mishawaka and surrounding community. They were the third owners of the Oriental Market in Mishawaka, and they also owned Sony’s Korean Cuisine in Mishawaka and The Rustic Inn in Edwardsburg. Through these ventures, they shared their hard work, hospitality, and love of good food with many people over the years. Their businesses stood as a testament to their perseverance and partnership.
