Janet B. Tatum, 83, passed away peacefully of natural causes at Trailpoint Village, South Bend, Indiana on January 1, 2026. She was born on June 11, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois.
Janet was a dedicated and hardworking entrepreneur who owned and operated Corner Cottage, a successful hairdressing business she built from the ground up. Through the many years of commitment and care for her clients, she developed lasting relationships and became a familiar and trusted presence in the community. She continued running her business until retiring in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Samuel Tatum, in 2010.
Janet is survived by her son, Timothy Charles Tatum, and his wife, Lora Tatum; her granddaughter, Tiffany Finkler, and her husband, Jeff Finkler; and her great-grandson, Brady Finkler. Krystal (Jeremy) Lane was considered another granddaughter, who is a half-sister to Tiffany. Janet is also survived by her sisters, Levon Tripp and her husband Jim Tripp of California, and Judy Wilbur of South Bend, along with extended family and friends.
Jan’s proudest moment was giving birth to her son Tim. When Tim was younger and Charlie was on the road driving a truck for years, they became best friends and shared many special times together. Jan loved her Arby’s chocolate milk shakes, her snacks and coffee. Jan and Tim shared many dinners together at what was The Big Wheel. She also enjoyed going to Olive Garden and Red Lobster.
In her personal life, Jan found joy in crocheting, needlework, cooking, traveling and caring for her many cherished Chihuahuas over the years. Besides Charlie, her favorite companion was her beloved dog, Princess, who held a special place in her heart.
Jan missed her husband Charlie terribly after he passed away. When a loved one is gone, you realize the value that they brought to your life - a lesson for everyone to think on. It brings peace and makes us smile knowing they are together again.
No services will be held, and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
