Janet "Jan" Grass Obituary

Janet S. (Faris) Grass, known affectionately by friends and family as Jan, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, at the age of 86, in Granger, IN. She was born on April 28, 1939, in Carlisle, IN, to the late Walter "Morris" Faris and Virginia (Henderson) Faris. Her journey through life was one marked by dedication to her family, her faith, and the many students she taught over a commendable teaching career.

Janet's early years in Carlisle set the stage for a lifelong passion for education and service. After graduating from Carlisle High School in 1957, she went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree from Indiana State University. Her love for teaching blossomed into a 34-year career with the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation, where she touched the lives of countless children with her wisdom, kindness, and patience.

In 1960, Jan married her beloved husband, Terry Grass, in a beautiful ceremony in their hometown of Carlisle, IN. They shared a loving marriage until Terry's passing on April 15, 2025. Janet was also preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Virginia, and her dear sister Jean Ann Phegley.

Janet was the cherished mother of three children; Stacey (Steve) Closson, Lana (Tom) Bohl, and Jay (Amy) Grass. Her role as a mother was one she held dear to her heart, and it was a title she wore with pride and joy. Her five loving grandchildren were the light of her life, and she relished in each moment spent with them.

Her sister, Marilyn Faris, will remember Janet for the enduring bond they shared, and the memories they created together will be treasured forever.

Not only did Janet excel professionally and as a matriarch, but she also cultivated a wealth of interests that enriched her life. She was an excellent cook known for her delightful dishes, a testament to her caring nature, as she loved to share her meals with loved ones. An avid collector, Jan’s eye for antiques led her to many yard sales and auctions, places where she found joy in the simple pleasure of discovery. Her love for the outdoors shone through her enthusiasm for hiking and camping, embracing the beauty of nature at every opportunity.

A woman of deep faith, Janet was an active member of the United Methodist church, where she was profoundly involved in her spiritual community. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life and an inspiration to all who knew her.

At this time per Jan’s wishes there will be no services. A burial will take place at a later date at Oddfellow’s Cemetery in Carlisle, IN. Palmer Funeral Home – Bubb Chapel is honored to be assisting the family with the final arrangements.

The children would like to thank Heartland Hospice for their committed and compassionate care of both of our parents. Please consider a memorial contribution in Jan and Terry’s names. Another way to honor Jan’s love of children’s literature would be to make a donation to a local school library of your choice.
