Jay Robert Greenwood passed away at his home in Granger, Indiana, on February 17, 2026. He was born on July 24, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana.
Jay was the son of the late Robert J. Greenwood and Stella (Stefanski) Greenwood. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Parsons College and served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1974. After his military service, he worked for many years as a Grocery Manager at Martin’s Supermarket, where he was known as dependable and fair.
In the late 1980s, Jay and Diana moved to the family farm. Raising llamas and goats became part of their everyday routine — chores to do, fences to fix, and animals to care for. It was simply how life was lived during those years.
Jay was a quiet person by nature, but he had a dry sense of humor that those close to him appreciated. If you got him talking about the right subject, he was thoughtful and engaging. He didn’t seek attention and was often in the background, but he was a steady and constant presence for his family. It will be strange not having him here with us.
Jay enjoyed golfing and most of his vacations involved finding a course to play. He and Diana also took a cruise to Alaska and visited Hawaii, which he loved. He often said that if he ever went back to Hawaii, he wouldn’t be coming home. As a family, they spent a week every summer camping in Northern Michigan. Jay especially loved tent camping and the simple routine of those trips.
He also enjoyed woodworking. Over the years, he helped build the family home, built a treehouse for his children, and made cutting boards that he sold at the local Farmer’s Market. These are the kinds of memories his family will hold on to.
Family was important to Jay. He is survived by his wife, Diana (Grindeland) Greenwood. Together they raised two children, Cara (Kevin) Alderfer of Granger, Indiana, and Adam (Katie) Greenwood of Noblesville, Indiana. He was also a grandfather to Jensen, Addilyn, and Alex.
He is survived by his sister, Sue Parma of Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his sister Joyce Tetzlaff and brother Tom Anderson.
In keeping with Jay’s wishes, there will be no formal services. Palmer Funeral Homes – Welsheimer North Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. A Celebration of Life will be held this summer at the Greenwood Family Farm, with the date to be announced.
