Jayn Barson Obituary

Jayn Marie Barson, a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and educator, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2023, in Mishawaka, Indiana, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 10, 1965, in South Bend, Indiana, Jayn was the cherished daughter of Frank and Sharon (Graf) Nemeth.

Jayn is survived by her devoted husband, Ray Barson, whom she married on August 6, 1988, in South Bend. Together, they raised two wonderful children, son Alec and daughter Abbey.  Jayn is also survived by her brothers, Jeffery (Nancy) Nemeth of Orchard Lake, Michigan, and Jon (Tracy) Nemeth of West Bloomfield, Michigan. In addition, Jayn leaves behind her father and mother-in-law, Raymond Sr. and Mary Ann Barson of Mishawaka, sisters-in-law Debbie (Mike) Henke of Carol Stream, Illinois, and Karen (Tom) Moore of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, as well as a host of nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Jayn's passion for education and sports led her to attend Butler University on a volleyball scholarship during her freshman year. She later earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), where she met Ray.  Jayn dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching math and computer science at John Young Middle School in Mishawaka. She also served as an assistant volleyball coach alongside her father at Riley High School, sharing her love for the sport with the next generation of athletes.

A dedicated mother, Jayn's greatest joy was spending time with her family. Whether it was attending Alec and Abbey’s sporting events, celebrating the Fourth of July on the lake in Michigan or attending various family events, Jayn's presence was always a source of happiness and comfort. She also enjoyed playing cards with her euchre group, creating lasting memories with her friends.

Jayn was known for her calming, unselfish, and caring nature. She was always positive and hopeful, even during the most challenging times. Her courage and selflessness were evident throughout her life, particularly during her journey with illness. Jayn never complained, facing each day with grace and resilience. Those who knew her will remember her as a true warrior, an inspiration to all.

Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched, both in her personal life and through her many years as an educator and mentor. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 309 S. Taylor Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
