Joel Melvin Beckman III, 72, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 6:00AM on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, in Holy Cross Rehabilitation & Wellness Center. Born on December 24, 1953, in Pontiac, Michigan, Joel, known as “Chip” by family and friends, was the son of Joel M. Beckman Jr. and Irene “Cece” Beckman.
After earning his Bachelor of Science Education from IUSB in 1991, Joel dedicated 29 years of his life to education as an elementary teacher with the South Bend Community School Corporation. He cared deeply for his students and encouraged each of them to recognize their own potential. His kindness, patience, and passion for teaching left a lasting impact on countless young lives before his first retirement in 2014. After retiring, Joel greatly missed being in the classroom and ended up teaching again until 2020.
From a young age, Joel found joy in nature and the outdoors. He loved fishing, hiking, camping, and listening to birdsong. Whether admiring flowers, gazing at the stars, or spontaneously setting out on a road trip to Michigan, New Mexico, or wherever the sunshine called him, Joel embraced adventure and simple beauty with enthusiasm. Armed with little more than a paper map and a sense of curiosity, he enjoyed discovering new places and making memories along the way.
Joel was known for his gift of conversation and storytelling. He enjoyed connecting with friends, family, students, and even strangers through humor, small talk, and heartfelt stories. Those who knew him will remember his warm spirit, adventurous heart, and genuine interest in others.
He is survived by his daughter, Emma Beckman of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; his stepson, Adam Minich; his stepdaughter Jenna Swanson; his sister, Julie (Bill) Welling; his sister Sandy Moreland; his sister-in-law, Jan Beckman; and nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Scott Beckman.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit from 10:00-11:00AM, in the funeral home prior to the service. Cremation has taken place at Southlawn Cremation Services.
Joel will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
