John Joseph Welch Jr., age 80, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, at his home.
John was born on August 30, 1945, in Endicott, New York, to the late John J. Welch and Mary A. (Riley) Welch. John married the love of his life, Eileen J. (McLean) Welch and were happily married for 50 years.
In addition to his beloved wife, John is survived by his children, Cynthia, Todd, Mary, and Kathleen; his 6 grandchildren; and his 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Catherine Losee.
John proudly served his country as a veteran of the Vietnam War and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to public service as a detention officer with the Chicago Police Department.
A man of many talents, John was an accomplished carpenter and a highly skilled electrician. In his spare time, he enjoyed working out, building birdhouses, and spending countless hours immersed in the pages of his favorite novels. Above all, he treasured the time spent with his family and leaves behind many cherished memories.
In accordance with his wishes, John will be cremated, and no public services are planned at this time.
Memorial contributions in John's honor may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
