Joseph Trethewey Obituary

Joseph “Tom” Trethewey passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2026.

Tom was born on December 29, 1935, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Joseph Trethewey and Isabel W. (Chamberlain) Trethewey. On May 16, 1959, he married the love of his life, Merrylin (Priest) Trethewey, who preceded him in death in 2023. His parents and his sister Margot preceded Tom in death. Tom is survived by his loving children, Carol and Brad Trethewey; his eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

As a proud veteran of the United States Army, Tom carried a strong sense of duty and service throughout his life. He was a member of various clubs, including the Blue Lodge #45 Masonic Scottish Rite, the IU Alumni Association, and the Guys & Dolls Dance Group. Tom spent his early years working in his father’s jewelry store. He dedicated most of his professional life to the banking industry.

Tom was always a child at heart, enriching the lives of his family with endless joy and laughter. One of Tom’s favorite pastimes was telling long, detailed stories. His favorite story was meeting his wife, Merrylin. Tom often said, “She twirled my heart away.” His loved ones will miss Tom’s contagious smile and nurturing spirit. Tom’s legacy will continue in the hearts of his loved ones, remembering him as a beacon of love, laughter, and gentleness.
