Granger, IN – June E. Cather-Nyers passed away on Monday, October 11, 2021 of natural causes. June was born on June 15, 1940 in Bremen, IN., the daughter of Dudley and Lillian (Sinninger) Legner. Preceding her in death was her father and mother, a sister, Carolyn and her husband William Kline and a nephew Jay Miller. Surviving June are a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara (Lowell) Heckaman, along with four nieces, namely, Beth (Larry) Enders, Robin (Wayne) Spicher, Gwynn (Leroy) LeDrake and Kim (Danny) Carpenter, and two nephews, namely, Kent Heckaman, Kris (Laura) Heckaman, along with several grand nieces and nephews.
On February 20, 1960 June married Larry Grant Cather, they having two sons, Tracy and Corby, all of whom are deceased. June was devoted to her family. Her husband and sons were the primary focus of her life. Her love for them was deep and far reaching. Family life was the one thing she most cherished.
On July 7, 1990 she married Stephen J. Nyers III who has three sons from a former marriage, namely, Stephen IV, Anthony & Christopher, all of whom survive.
June attended Bremen High School. She then attended Butler University and Completed her college education at Indiana University of South Bend, being awarded a Bachelors of Arts Degree in General Studies with Highest Distinction in 1990.
June commenced her career working in various disciplines including production management, personnel, purchasing, office management and property management. After returning to school and obtaining her BA degree, she was employed as Human Resources Manager at the Associates Bancorp, Inc. in South Bend, Indiana. This proved to be utopia for June as she became fully engaged in her responsibilities. Her devotion and dedication to all employees in helping resolve whatever problems they encountered. Her compassion and empathy toward others shone throughout her career. June received the “Associates Employee of the Year” award in her first full year of employment. Additionally, June was also honored as a “Tribute to Women” at the 13th Annual YWCA Recognition Dinner on March 16, 1992.
Anyone who knew June realized how very special she was. Whoever had conversations with her knew that she devoted her complete attention to any discussion. She was a gifted listener who spoke only at appropriate times during conversations. She genuinely cared for people.
While in high school, June was a member of a girls’ club called the DLD’s (Dizzy Little Daisies). The relationship with these wonderful ladies continued throughout her life.
She was devoted to her faith with a genuine love for the Lord. Her faith could be visibly seen and felt through her interactions with whomever she came in contact. She radiated warm feelings and goodness to all around her. She always gave honor and glory to the Lord.
Reading was a significant part of her life. She spent many hours poring over medical publications. Newspapers were read from cover to cover.
The family would like to express its appreciation to all the employees at North Woods Village, especially to our dear Eva Williams, QMA whose attention to every need was unfailing. A special thank you to our friend, Dr. Shay Mokfi, for his loving and caring expertise in looking in on June. Finally, thanks to the Heart to Heart Hospice group in providing care for June in her final days.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Palmer Funeral Homes – Welsheimer North Chapel located at 17033 Cleveland Rd, South Bend, IN 46635. A Funeral Mass is scheduled on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church 52553 Fir Rd. Granger, IN; Msgr. William C. Schooler officiating. Family and friends may visit 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Alzheimers Association.
A luncheon is planned at M.R. Falcons, 3212 Keller Street, South Bend, IN immediately after the service at the Sacred Heart Cemetery on Western Avenue, South Bend, IN. All are welcome to come.
