Karen Kurtis Obituary

Karen S. Kurtis (Gromski), 82, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

Karen was born on January 30, 1944, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Henry S. Gromski and Florence E. (Krol) Gromski.

She is survived by her three sons, Mark A. Kurtis of South Bend, Gary M. Kurtis of Mishawaka, and Kristofer M. Kurtis of Austin, Texas; her beloved grandson, Joseph M. Kurtis; two sisters, Geraldine "Gerrie" (Joseph) Gorny of South Bend and Carol Gromski of Mishawaka; along with many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.

Karen was preceded in death by her devoted husband of nearly 58 years, Michael Kurtis, whom she married on October 22, 1966, and who passed away in 2024; her parents, Henry and Florence Gromski; and her sister, Janet Gromski.

Karen found joy in the simple things that brought happiness to those she loved. She had a passion for sewing and cooking and amassed an impressive collection of cookbooks over the years. One of her greatest pleasures was creating handmade Halloween costumes for her children as they were growing up and later continuing that tradition for her grandson during his younger years. Her creativity, generosity, and love for her family will be remembered by all who knew her.

Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Karen's life on Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, Indiana 46635.
