Kathleen Marie Cain Lawton passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of intellect, quick wit, style and unwavering devotion to family and community. Born on August 24, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana, she was the daughter of Dr. Edgar and Marie Cain and the fourth of six children.
Kathleen is survived by her five children: Ed Lawton (Anne) of Alpharetta, Georgia; Kate Lawton of South Bend; Peter Lawton of Peoria, Arizona; Elizabeth Gerber (Frank) of Greenbrae, California; and Julie Lawton (Mike Price) of Peoria, Arizona. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Brandon, Ed, Bella, Andy, Natalie, John, and Danny, and a delighted great-grandmother to Eloise. She is also survived by her brother, Jim. Kathleen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39 years, Ed Lawton, DDS; her son, Christopher; and her sisters Fran, Pat, Char, Mary and Liz.
A graduate of St Mary’s Academy in South Bend, Kathleen pursued her Education degree at Marquette University with a major in English and Journalism. She taught English at Riley High School, a vocation that reflected her lifelong love of learning and literature. Soon after, Kathleen married Ed and embraced what she considered her most meaningful role—raising their children with care, discipline, and her unforgettable sense of humor.
Kathleen lived independently, in the same home where she raised her children, until December 2025. She loved to host friends and family for weekends, reunions, and Notre Dame games. Her home was her castle. Kathleen was involved in many social clubs, including the Wednesday Club which met on Thursday, Hand & Foot, two bridge clubs and a non-fiction book club. She loved playing bridge, reading, sitting on her porch with friends and family, soaking up sunshine, walking around her neighborhood, decorating for Christmas and laughing along to Seinfeld.
Kathleen was an active member of numerous charitable and civic organizations, including the Junior League of South Bend, Christ Child Society of South Bend, and the Antiquarian Society. She brought intelligence, discernment, and steady leadership to every endeavor.
At her core, Kathleen was a caregiver—attentive, perceptive, and quietly generous. She had an instinct for knowing when someone needed support, and she offered it with both strength and compassion. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she took immense joy in her family, traveling often to be present in the lives of her grandchildren and never forgot a birthday! She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Center for Hospice, Senior One, Northwoods Memory Care, Luminary Hospice, and Right at Home. Their kindness and dedication ensured that Kathleen’s final months were filled with comfort, dignity, and love.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at noon, followed by a 1:00 p.m. mass, with Msgr. William Schooler presiding.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Christ Child Society of South Bend would be greatly appreciated.
