Kathleen McClone Obituary

Kathleen McClone, 77 years old, passed away at 8:37 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Goshen Hospital.  She was born on March 17, 1946 in South Bend and was the only child born to Alice and Ivan McClone.  She describes a happy childhood. Kathleen lived with her parents until their deaths (Alice in 1976 and Ivan in 1986).

Due to her mild intellectual disability and vulnerability to exploitation, Kathy struggled living in a place of her own.  Finally, in 1999, with the help of Logan Protective Services, Kathy’s cousins, Janet Pike and Betty Wesolowski, were able to place her in the safety of Portage Manor.  While there, she enjoyed a commitment ceremony to her beloved, Nick Unowicz, who also lived there.  Kathy had to move away from the Portage Manor community to a nursing home in 2018.  After Nick also had to leave Portage Manor for medical reasons in 2022, Kathy asked to transfer to his nice, little nursing home, the Waters of Syracuse.  They were united again!

Kathy was an unfailingly sweet and considerate woman.  As her heart failed, we learned just how brave she was as well.

Kathy is survived by her cousin, Betty Wesolowski; her mate, Nick Unowicz; and her Guardianship Caseworker from Logan Protective Services, Matt Costello.
