Larry Mowery Obituary

Larry W. Mowery, a cherished husband, caring father, and doting grandfather, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2024, in South Bend, IN. Born on August 18, 1937, in Ullin, IL, Larry's life journey was marked by devotion to his family, a profound commitment to his community, and a lifetime of service to his country.

Graduating from Ullin High School in the class of 1954, Larry soon found his calling to serve his country in the United States Air Force. His patriotism was paralleled by his academic interest in the weather, which led to an illustrious 35-year career as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. Larry's expertise and dependability were cornerstones of his career and his character.

Larry's deep roots in faith were demonstrated through his role as the chairman of trustees at East United Methodist Church in Mishawaka. His values and spirit of service were further exemplified by his membership in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and his devoted affiliation with the Newburgh, IN Masonic Lodge no 174 since 1967, where he was honored as a 32nd degree Mason. He held his beliefs as a Proud Democrat close to his heart and participated actively in local civic duties.

In his personal life, Larry loved to be surrounded by the sounds of nature and the laughter of his loved ones. An avid fisherman and hunter, he found solace and joy in the great outdoors, a passion he shared with his family and friends, creating countless precious memories.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, Ocal and Elizabeth (Miller) Mowery, his beloved first wife Margaret (Coffey) Mowery, with whom he shared his life until her passing in 2004, and his brother-in-law, Kay Johnson. He found love again and married Karen (Stoehr-Schroeder) Mowery on July 30, 2005, at East United Methodist Church, enriching his life with more years of happiness and companionship.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Beth (Jim) Adams, Nancy (Terry) Ladson, Elizabeth (Kevin) Whitelegg, his sons, David and Mark (Joni) Schroeder, daughter in law, Amy Mowery, and sister, Judy Johnson. Larry's legacy continues through his loving grandchildren, Jimmy (Kelsee) Adams, Christen (Tom) Henry, Eric (Alissa) Mowery, Andrew, Taylor, and Allison Mowery, Cameron Koontz, Payton Ladson, Donovan (Bri), and Collin Schroeder, Katelynn Whitelegg, as well as his cherished great-grandchildren, Ava, Lincoln, Livvy Adams and Maggie Henry.

Remembered for his loving nature, kind-heartedness, and gentle humor, Larry left a lasting impact on all who knew him. His legacy will live on through the immeasurable love he bestowed and the wisdom he imparted. Larry W. Mowery was a beacon of light in this world, and though he will be profoundly missed, his memory will forever warm the hearts of those he touched.
