Lauren Ann Maloney-Dillon

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Lauren Ann Maloney Dillon. Lauren lived a life defined by love for her family, dedication to her students, and a deep appreciation for friends, adventure, and the outdoors. 

Lauren's greatest joy was being the mother of her daughters, Hannah Elli Dillon, 20, a student at Indiana University, and Gabriella Margaret Dillon, 17, a rising senior at John Adams High School. Her "girlies" were the center of her world. Whether she was cheering them on, sharing adventures, offering advice, or simply spending time together, Lauren poured her heart into motherhood. She was fiercely protective, endlessly supportive, and deeply proud of the remarkable young women they have become. They shared a particularly special close bond - filled with love, laughter, trust, and friendship. Through her example, she taught Hannah and Gabby to be kind, compassionate, accepting, and to see the good in everyone they met. The values she instilled in them and the memories they shared will remain with them always. 

Born on September 10, 1985, in Marion, Ohio, Lauren was the beloved youngest daughter of Cindy and Joe Maloney and sister to Ryan (Alicia) Maloney, Kerry (Daniel) Gahleitner, and Erin Maloney (Colin Highlands). She was also a devoted and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, Alina, Felix, and Nora Gahleitner; Russell and Scarlett Maloney; and Tyler Highlands. Lauren loved being an aunt and her time spent playing, laughing, snuggling, and making memories with her nieces and nephews. 

A graduate of Saint Joseph High School's Class of 2004, Lauren earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University South Bend. She dedicated her career to serving children through the South Bend Community School Corporation, where she taught for eleven years. Most recently, she found tremendous joy creating hands-on learning experiences in her Makerspace classroom. Lauren believed every child deserved to feel valued, supported, and loved. She often provided clothing, personal care items, and encouragement to students in need, extending her care beyond the classroom. Her students were her "babies," and she advocated tirelessly for them.

Lauren embraced life with enthusiasm. She was known for her beautiful smile, adventurous spirit, and ability to make everyone feel welcome and accepted. She loved music and spent countless memorable days and nights attending concerts and festivals, especially enjoying Phish and the Grateful Dead and most recently seeing Primus just days before her passing.

As a nature lover, Lauren found peace and happiness outdoors. She was an avid morel mushroom forager whose secret spots remained closely guarded. She loved the beaches of Lake Michigan and treasured time spent at her parents' lake house on Magician Lake, where she could often be found diving from the dock, swimming for hours, or pulling weeds from the water simply because she enjoyed caring for the place she loved.  Lauren's nurturing spirit extended to her yardcare and houseplants as well. She took great pride in caring for a thriving collection of plants, many of which had been lovingly "adopted" from family and friends over the years and given new life under her care. 

Lauren also leaves behind her faithful dog, Ozzy (her lumpy monkey), and her beloved cats, Blaze, Boot, and David Bowie. True to her compassionate nature, her pets were a hodgepodge family of rescues—taken in from relatives and friends during times of need or found wandering and in need of a home. Lauren never hesitated to open her heart to an animal in need, and they were cherished members of her family. 

Those who knew Lauren remember her as genuine, quirky, compassionate, and giving. She was the friend who celebrated life's joys with enthusiasm, stood beside others during hardship, and offered unconditional love without judgment. She was the coworker who inspired those around her, the teacher who changed lives, and a loyal friend.

Lauren leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, acceptance, curiosity, and love. Her influence lives on in the lives of her daughters, her family, her students, and the countless friends and colleagues who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she was taken from us far too soon, the memories she created and the lives she touched will continue to shine brightly for years to come.
