Hollis: I was so surprised to hear about Lavery! I recently had back surgery, and have not been at the office to hear about Lavery's sudden passing. I just know she was an awesome woman and a wonderful patient to take care of. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. Barb, CMA

The Bible says, "Better is the day of death, than the day of birth" Ecclesiastes 7:1 It explains that by time of death you have made a good name, reputation for yourself!!
Still, the gift of everlasting life could not be earned. Romans 6:23; Psalms 49:6-9. So as we mourn, may we increase in faith in our Lord Jesus Christ ransom sacrifice,by looking forward when we see Lavera again! healthy, never to suffer again! To Hollis and LaVera's dear mother and family with deep sympathy, Richetta Willis

The Family of Hollis Hughes,
May your memories of Lavera be of happy times, joyful smiles, hearty laughter, and caring words. Most importantly, comfort comes in knowing death is not the end. Those who die in Christ live eternally. We will see her again.
Lavera's uncle was one of my professors at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He left a legacy, also. I am blessed to have known both of them.

Lavera was a special classmate and very obviously has remained a very special and lovely person her whole life. I wish we had stayed in touch and I had gotten to know her husband who must be an exceptional person also.
She is walking with and being an angel now, blesing all the people she has reached in her life.

Your my favorite teacher. I'm thankful that I got to be your student. You always pushed me to be better. From making me be the narrator of the play we put on, when I just wanted to hide in the back. To helping me learn how to write with my left Han after I broke my right. Seeing you in a store you remembered me all those years later. Telling me to hurry up and have my child so you could teach her. You put on your well earned wings, tilted that halo and fly high spreading your love faster now. Much love to your family sending prayers,I'm so sorry and now at a loss as you all are.

Mr. Hughes, We know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. You will probably never know the impact that you have had on my life and the lives of so many other African American men simply by your manner of living. Both you and your wife have had and will continue to have a legacy worth emulating. May the blessings of the Lord be upon you always especially in a time such as this. Dear Hollis,
I was shocked and saddened by the news of Lavera's death. Unfortunately I have to out of town on a business trip both Thursday and Friday and I will not be able to express my sympathies in person. I always enjoyed seeing Lavera at the club in the morning. She always had a smile on her face. I have heard of her reputation as a marvelous teacher. With her positive personality she had to have been a gift to her students.

Please know that I have and will continue to remember Lavera and you in my prayers. God bless you both.

Hollis, my heart aches for you and your family. I cherish the moments when I would run into Lavera at the grocery store..I would always ask "where is Hollis?" and she would laugh and tell me "Hughes is sitting at home doin' nothing"

This is the perfect picture of Lavera.... strong, proud, beautiful.

So very sorry to hear that Lavera has passed. We were classmates, JHS Class of '61, and our yearbook described her well: "Who can choose but to adore her." She was energetic, friendly, and active in school affairs - a joy to be with. She always wanted to be a teacher and I'm awed by her achievements. Great job, Vera!

My sincere sympathy to Lavera's husband, mother, family, and friends. She truly was special.
