Captain Lonnie D. Williamson, age 80, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026. He was born on February 10, 1945, in Buchanan, Michigan, to the late Clarance and Dathner (Williams) Williamson.
Lonnie lived a life defined by adventure, resilience, and an unmistakable free spirit. In his younger years, he worked as a ship captain, transporting supplies and staff to the oil rigs in the Gulf of America. The sea suited him—its unpredictability, its vastness, its sense of freedom. Though he would later lose everything during Hurricane Katrina, he carried on with the same grit and independence that shaped his life.
For many years, Lonnie worked as a self-employed handyman, using his skills to help others and build a life on his own terms. He traveled the country, embracing the road with the heart of a gypsy and the curiosity of an artist. Creativity came naturally to him—he loved to paint, carve wood, and bring beauty to life with his hands. His stories were legendary, told with the kind of detail and authenticity that only comes from a life fully lived.
Above all, Lonnie loved his family and friends deeply. He is survived by his daughter, Jolene (Alan Middleton) Davis; his grandchildren, Mikenna Zeller and Kendell Davis; his sister, Anne Freeze; and his brothers, Alfred (Dana) Williamson and Richard Williamson. He also leaves behind a host of extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly and remember him with affection.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation will take place and no services will be held. Palmer Funeral Home – Hoven Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
