Margaret Strantz Obituary

Margaret “Marge” Ana Strantz, 90, a lifelong resident of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on June 15, 2026. She was born on July 13, 1935, to the late Anton and Katharine (Thuringer) Strantz. Marge was a cherished sister who was predeceased by her siblings Mary Ann Dixon, John (and the late Phyllis Strantz) Strantz, Anton Strantz, Elizabeth “Betty” Strantz, and Kathryn Screes (and the late William Screes). She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Marge began working at the University of Notre Dame immediately after her high school graduation. She dedicated her entire 49-year career to Notre Dame Student Affairs.
A devoted fan of all Notre Dame sports, Marge was legendary for refusing to answer the phone once pregame coverage for a Notre Dame football game began. Everyone who knew her knew better than to call during a game.
If the Olympics offered a medal in bargain hunting, Marge would have been a gold medalist in yard sales, clearance racks, and numerous categories of collectibles.
Marge will be remembered for her booming laugh and her firmly held, freely offered opinions. If you wanted to debate Marge, you needed a strong will, plenty of spare time, and a firm grasp of the facts. Her mind remained sharp until the very end.
Marge loved animals and continued to provide food and housing to her neighborhood feral cats until she passed away.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Friends and family may visit with the family at the church beginning one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will follow immediately at Highland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, 4626 Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
