Mary Kathryn Barnette, lovingly known as Kathy, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, in Mishawaka, Indiana, the place she called home and where she was born on May 31, 1951. Kathy lived a life defined by compassion, warmth, and an enduring commitment to others. She proudly served St. Joseph County as a probation officer for 16 years, carrying out her work with grace, integrity, and heartfelt care.
A graduate of Penn High School, Kathy went on to earn her bachelor’s degree with high honors from Indiana University South Bend, laying the foundation for a life of meaningful service. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Anna Barnette; her grandchildren, Ashlin Bennett, Kylynn Buwa, and Johnathon Buwa; and her great-granddaughter, Amelia. She is also survived by her brother, David North, and his wife, Peggy. Kathy was preceded in death by her son, John Riggle; her sisters, Joyce Barnett, Laverne Watkins, and Shirley Atkins; and her parents, Ora Estill and Mary Elizabeth North.
Kathy’s adventurous spirit, kind heart, and nurturing soul left a lasting imprint on all who knew her. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her legacy of love and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
No services are being held at this time, Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN 46615, is assisting the family with arrangements.
