Mary C. (Cross) Morris, 99, of South Bend passed away on Tuesday May 5, 2026, at Storypoint in Granger.
Mary was born in Kokomo, IN on May 24, 1926, to the late Sylvester and Alice Cross.
After High School, Mary attended Ball State University where she met the love of her life, Homer Morris. Marrying April 22, 1947, they moved to South Bend when Homer took a teaching job there. In 1952 they moved into their pride and joy, the house they built by themselves, residing there for 70 years. They were married 60 years before his passing in 2007.
They were blessed with two children, Emily (Bill) Welsch and Matthew Morris.
Mary was a gifted seamstress, painter, and gardener. She took art classes throughout her life at the South Bend Art Center. She made all of her own clothes for herself and her daughter, sometimes even sewing for her husband and son. She cultivated flowers and a large garden from which she canned and froze vegetables and fruits to feed her family.
She loved to travel, camp, and read in the boat while Homer fished. They traveled all around the country and Europe several times. They had many adventures.
Mary was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in South Bend. She was a member of the Schoolman’s Wives Club, and an avid bridge player.
Mary is survived by her children and her great grandson Emmett Morris.
